LCRC now accepting applications for Summer Undergraduate Cancer Research Experience 2025 - SUCRE

Nov. 15, 2024, New Orleans, LA - College students interested in pursuing a career in cancer research are urged to apply to the Louisiana Cancer Research Center’s (LCRC) Summer Undergraduate Cancer Research Experience (SUCRE).  Applications are now being accepted through January 15, 2025, for the 8-week session.

Selected students can explore and develop their interests by working in a research lab with an assigned faculty mentor from LCRC institutions Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center - New Orleans, Tulane School of Medicine and Xavier University of Louisiana.

The program runs from Monday, June 2 - Friday, July 25, 2025. Application and info here.   Preference is given to college juniors and seniors with at least one semester of remaining undergraduate coursework, who have completed advanced work relating to cancer or biomedical research, and have a demonstrated interest in pursuing an advanced degree.  A stipend is provided as part of the program.

“The LCRC Summer Undergraduate Cancer Research Experience provides undergraduates with the opportunity to learn from accomplished researchers on projects designed specifically for the student in a supportive environment in one of the world’s greatest cities," said Charles Wood, PhD, a member of the LCRC faculty and Cancer Crusader Professor, department of interdisciplinary oncology and associate director of basic science at LSU LCMC Health New Orleans.

Selected students will design and implement their tailor-made research project utilizing instrumentation and equipment in LCRC labs and core facilities, under the guidance of expert faculty.

"One of my favorite aspects of SUCRE is the final poster session during which fellows present and defend their research,” said Joe W. Ramos, PhD, CEO/Director of the Louisiana Cancer Research Center and LSU LCMC Health Cancer Center. Their work is always impressive and reflects the high caliber of the students attracted to the program."

“SUCRE considers applications from college undergraduates in the United States and abroad. Those accepted may find themselves working in any one of LCRC’s program areas: Cancer Biology, Genes & Environment, Translational Oncology, and Population Sciences & Disparities,” said Fern Tsien, PhD, Assistant Dean for Medical Student Research at LSU Health Sciences Center, who leads the training aspect of the program.
