LCRC Selects 2025 SUCRE Fellows

The Louisiana Cancer Research Center’s Summer Undergraduate Cancer Research Experience (SUCRE), has selected eleven undergraduate students for its 2025 cohort. The SUCRE Fellows will spend 8 weeks researching under the guidance of faculty mentors from three LCRC institutions:  Louisiana State University Health New Orleans, Tulane University School of Medicine, and Xavier University of Louisiana.

The following students were selected for SUCRE, which runs June 2 - July 25:

Cheyenne Roberts, University of California Los Angeles

Elinor Romaguera, LSU

Nathan Xiang, Tulane University

Shawn Sutherland, Syracuse University

Sihyoung Kim, Xavier University of Louisiana

Trinity Tanner, University of Alabama

Walter Wilber, University of Alabama

James Bailey, Xavier University of Louisiana

Marie Howe, LSU

Lockley McElroy, Tulane University

Tessa Peterson, Tulane University

"Through SUCRE, the Louisiana Cancer Research Center and its member institutions are supporting the next generation of cancer researchers. The program provides a hands-on opportunity for college students to explore their research interests," said Charles Wood, PhD, LCRC assistant director of cancer research training and professor of interdisciplinary oncology - LSU Health New Orleans.  "Each student will conduct a research project with a mentor and they will  present their research findings at the conclusion of the session. It can be an eye-opening experience that we hope will get them thinking about pursuing post-graduate work on cancer here in Louisiana.”

Participation in the summer research program is limited to current undergraduates who have exhibited an interest in pursuing cancer research as a career, with at least one semester of coursework remaining before obtaining a bachelor's degree.
