Overview

Training and education programs are part of the Cancer Research Training & Education Coordination (CRTEC) program, which provides opportunities for students and faculty at various educational levels. The program focuses on:

Training and career development for researchers in basic, translational, clinical, and population sciences.

Encouraging interest in cancer research among students from middle school to undergraduate levels.

Educating the Louisiana community about cancer and related careers.

Training LCRC administrative staff to support research and training missions.

The program also supports research and clinical fellowships, along with training and recognition opportunities.

SUMMER STUDENT PROGRAM

The Louisiana Cancer Research Center Summer Undergraduate Cancer Research Experience (SUCRE) program offers an 8-week immersive summer cancer research opportunity for undergraduates interested in exploring a career in cancer research.

TRAVEL AWARDS

CRTEC Travel Award Program provides travel awards to undergraduate students, graduate students, and postdoctoral trainees to enhance their training experience in the LCRC-affiliated laboratories and to reinforce national exposure to LCRC research projects.

TRAINEE MEMBERSHIP

Trainee Membership Criteria

Trainee membership is open to all current graduate student, medical student, postdoc, or resident at LCRC partner institution

Trainees must be focused on cancer research or clinical training

Benefits OF MEMBERSHIP

Connections to cancer center research programs and their meetings

Access to specific trainee funding opportunities (such as travel awards)

Trainee-specific workshops

Inclusion in cancer center communications, meetings, retreats, symposiums, seminars, and other events

Eligible to be selected for research highlights or recognized for honors and travel awards

Expectations OF Trainees

Active participation in broader cancer center activities

All Trainee members must acknowledge LCRC support as appropriate in publications and in presentations/media coverage, etc.

Provide all requested information regarding scholarly activities and accomplishments promptly to the LCRC training administrative when requested.

Provide career progress updates, even if/when no longer affiliated with LCRC or a partner institution, via a short annual survey.

program area descriptions:

Cancer Biology: Work in discovery of new cancer driving mechanisms including signal transduction, hormonal response, apoptosis, tumor microenvironment, cancer immunology

Translational Oncology: Developing therapeutics and diagnostics, developing or running cancer clinical trials.

Cancer Population Sciences & Disparities: The epidemiology of cancer, especially disparities, health equity, and behavioral interventions for better prevention and diagnosis.

Applications are reviewed by the LCRC CRTEC Committee whose recommendations are forwarded to the Center Director for final determination.
