Dr. Omeed Moaven is a board-certified surgical oncologist and assistant professor of surgery and interdisciplinary oncology at the LSU Health New Orleans School of Medicine and LSU LCMC Health Cancer Center. He received his medical degree from Mashhad University.
He started his general surgery residency at Massachusetts General Hospital and completed his residency at the University of Alabama, Birmingham. He completed a surgical oncology research fellowship at the Massachusetts General Hospital and a clinical complex general surgical oncology fellowship at Wake Forest University.
He was recruited to the Mayo Clinic Florida after his fellowship training and joined LSU Health New Orleans following his fellowship completion.
His clinical interest is multidisciplinary treatment of pancreas and hepatobiliary (HPB), and gastrointestinal (GI) malignancies. He is interested in clinical program development and has established EMPOWER Program: "Evaluation, Multimodality Prehabilitation, and Oncology Support: A Well-being Enhancement Resource". EMPOWER program is a multidisciplinary prehabilitation program focused on improving patients' performance status and nutritional status and providing psychosocial support for patients who
undergo neoadjuvant treatment for HPB/GI malignancies, aiming to improve the outcomes of oncologic surgical resection.
Dr. Moaven has also established LSU LCMC Health Cancer Center’s biobank and serves as the director of the biobank and the biorepository core of the cancer center. He serves as the site primary investigator for the Alliance of Clinical Trials in Oncology in the Gulf Shore NCORP and is a committee member in various national professional societies, including American Hepatopancreatobiliary Association (AHPBA) and Alliance for Clinical Trials in Oncology.
His translational research program is focused on investigating oncolytic virotherapy to improve response to immunotherapy for pancreatic cancer. His lab has designed novel oncolytic viruses being investigated to target pancreatic cancer tumor microenvironment and improve immune response against pancreatic cancer.
He has published over 60 manuscripts and book chapters in various high-impact peer-reviewed journals, including Cell Metabolism, Proceedings of the National Academy of Science, Annals of Surgery, Journal of Clinical Oncology Precision Oncology, Cancers, the Journal of the American College of Surgeons, Annals of Surgical Oncology, etc. He has served both as editor and reviewer in various peer-reviewed journals in the field of oncology, and multiple local, regional, and national awards have recognized his research and academic efforts.
