Jamie Newman PhD

Jamie Newman PhD

Associate Professor, Associate Dean for Research & Graduate Studies

Dr. Newman is an Associate Professor of Biology in the School of Biological Sciences and the Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Studies in the College of Applied and Natural Sciences.  In all of these roles, she works closely with her colleagues and our students to create a supportive and engaging learning environment.  She teach classes for the School of Biological Sciences and supervises a research lab focused on understanding stem cell biology and the mechanisms that control cell state.

Dr. Newman grew up in Los Angeles and moved east to attend Amherst College in Massachusetts.  It was there that she met her advisor and mentor who showed her the possibilities for a career in biological research.  Dr. Newman completed an undergraduate thesis, worked as a laboratory technician at MIT, and completed her PhD in Biology at MIT.  At Louisiana Tech Dr. Newman directs a research lab comprised of undergraduates from Biology, Chemistry, and Biomedical Engineering, Master’s Degree students from Biology and Molecular Science in Nanotechnology (MSNT), and PhD Candidates from the MSNT program. The goal of her lab is to understand how environment, signaling pathways, and transcription factors control cell state and determine cell fate.  This research aims to help make stem cells more clinically relevant for the treatment of a number of degenerative and injury related health concerns.
