Hana Safah, MD

Professor

My areas of specialty include hematologic malignancies, bone marrow transplantation, leukemia, lymphoma, and multiple myeloma. In addition, I have significant experience in clinical trial development. As Medical Director of the IRB at Tulane Medical School between July 2006 and February 2008, I gained significant experience in the evaluation of clinical studies, consent forms, and SAE forms. I also dealt with various issues related to clinical research, such as subject enrollment, protection of patients’ rights and ensuring that studies enrolled patients of all ethnicities including from the minority population of New Orleans. From April 2008 to March 2020, I served as Tulane’s Institutional Principal Investigator for SWOG protocols. I have also initiated multiple in-house phase II studies that target treatment of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, Hodgkin’s, and Leukemia with allogeneic and autologous stem cell transplantation. My role in the Clinical Core of the proposed U19 will entail supervising a specialized nurse practitioner, Mr. Byram, in the performance of bone marrow aspiration and bone biopsy. I believe my expertise in bone marrow transplantation as well as in initiating and running clinical trials will aid in achieving the goals of the Clinical Core.
